ERNEST HEMINGWAY, THE LEGEND

Many
people
believe there has been no American writer like Ernest Hemingway.
He,
himself, has
become
a
legend in his own time.
A
member of the “lost generation” he was in many ways his own best character.
Hemingway
was first and foremost a literary scholar, a writer and reader of books.

  1. Hemingway’s writing is simple, direct and unadorned, probably because of his early newspaper training.
He avoids the adjective whenever possible.Hemingway, himself, believed a writer’s style should be direct and personal, his imagery rich and earthy, and his words simple and vigorous.
He thought the greatest writers should be hard workers and diligent scholars.

He is a master of dialog and at communicating emotions.

  2. Hemingway created a unique style called the Iceberg style, in which he follows the principle of omission. This was a new innovation in the world of literature at the time. He believed the deeper meaning of a story should not be evident on the surface, but should shine through implicitly. He said, “The test of any story is how very good the stuff that you, not your editors, omit.”
    HEMINGWAY’S HEROES
In almost all of Hemingway’s novels the hero was a person the readers could strongly identify with almost a dream sense. Hemingway was a man’s man. He moved from one love affair to another.
He participated in wild game hunting, enjoyed bullfights and drank insatiably and was involved in all of the so-called manly activities that the typical American male did not participate in but wanted to. He wrote about this in his books.

    HEMINGWAY’S HEROINES
Hemingway’s heroines submit to the heroes. She wants no other life than to be with him. By succumbing to the hero, she allows him to dominate her to affirm his manhood.
Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms says “There isn’t any me. I’m you. Don’t make up a separate me.” She continually tells him how much she loves him and asks does he love her.
    HEMINGWAY’S TECHNIQUES
In A Farewell to Arms Hemingway uses a technique – the falling-of-the-leaves. From the very beginning, the leaves come and go -- yet the war remains.
“when the rains came the leaves all fell”… and “ the trees along the road had small leaves”. He uses leaves throughout the text.
    RAIN AS SYMBOLISM
Hemingway uses rain as symbolism. The use of rain is very clear. It is used as a symbol of disaster.
The sound of rain continues in background accompaniment until Catherine Barkley die in the hospital ward
It rains from beginning to end and it creates a tragic atmosphere, in which the characters’ fate closely relates with the rain that works as a symbol of disaster telling the readers what will happen to the heroes and suggesting Henry’s final ending.
    QUOTES
“Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.”
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
“The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.”
WHAT READING HIS WRITING IS LIKE
I have loved reading Ernest Hemingway’s books. I read about ten of his books this summer and fall even before I did this project because I like his books so much.
His books are simple and direct. They are easy to understand with interesting plots and characters. Of course, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls are two of my favorites. His books also are not long. They are usually 250 –300 pages.
